• If possible, try to buy organic produce to ensure that you are not putting more chemicals and pesticides into your body.

• If you are doing chemotherapy or radiation therapy, take all supplements 10 to 12 hours after treatment or six hours before treatment. This ensures that the vitamins do not affect the conventional cancer treatment, but rather enhance the therapy being given.

The Chinese help prevent colon cancer by mixing an extract of the hairyvein agrimonia (agrimony) plant with ethyl alcohol (drinking alcohol). Agrimony is available in most health food stores.

Barberry (Berberis vulgaris)

Barberry is believed to suppress some forms of cancer, due to its high berberine content.

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum)

Cinnamon is believed to reduce the incidence of cancers caused by a number of synthetic food additives.

Greater Celandine (Chlidonium majus)

This plant is renowned for its blood purifying and stimulating qualities. A combination of greater celandine, stinging nettle and elder shoots has been used in cases of leukemia. But to be effective, at least 2 liters of this mixture must be drunk daily.

Hops (Humulus lupulus)

Traditionally used to treat cancer due to its blood cleansing properties.

Job’s Tears (Coix lacryma jobi)

The Chinese believe this herb may inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Male Fern (Dryopteris filix-mas)

Traditionally used to treat cancerous tumours and to heal wounds.

Plantain, Ribwort (Plantago lanceolata)

A poultice made from the plantain leaves is believed to encourage the removal of malignant growths. It is also believed beneficial in the treatment of malignant glandular disorders.

Saffron (Crocus sativus)

Saffron has been widely used for treating cancer, but has been outlawed for consumption in non-culinary situations in the United States because of an FDA report saying it can cause cancer in rats.

St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

Tests at the United States National Cancer Institute have shown that this herb has promise in the fight against cancer.

Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare)

Traditionally considered by herbalists as a cancer cure.

Wood Sorrel (Oxalis acetosella)

Wood sorrel is commonly known as sour wood or fairy bells. In popular medicine, wood sorrel juice was recommended for stomach cancer in the early stages, and cancer-like internal and external ulcers and growths.

Allicin is a sulphuric compound formed when fresh garlic is cut. Heat and ageing destroys allicin. Allicin destroys detrimental bacteria within the body. Diallyl sulphide is formed in the body from the conversion of allicin found in garlic and garlic oil. It is formed and released on consumption of garlic. Diallyl sulphide may decrease the incidence of colon cancer by up to 75 per cent and provide 100 per cent protection against oesophageal cancer.

Ajoene is also formed in the body from allicin ingested with garlic. It helps in the treatment of Burkitt’s lymphoma, a type of lymphatic cancer. Ajoene also prevents abnormal blood clotting.

Sulforaphane inhibits the development of cancer cells, by enhancing the function of enzymes that block cancer-causing carcinogens. Rich sources of sulforaphane include broccoli, cauliflower, kale and Brussels sprouts.

Glucosinates act as powerful antioxidants, potentially blocking the development of cancer. It kills the highly carcinogenic aflatoxin. Good sources of glucosinates include mustard seed oil, grapeseed oil, watercress, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and turnips.

Thymus Extracts

Thymosin is a group of thymus hormones that is now available in supplemental form. It is believed to cure several forms of cancer, when cancer is attributable to thymosin deficiency. Thymosin stimulates the body’s immune system gland, the thymus, and enhances the ability of phagocytes to decrease free radical reactions within the body. It is thought thymus extracts may be at least 50 per cent effective in treating some forms of cancer.

Vitamin Ñ is essential in the rapid healing of wounds and burns. It is one of the best vitamins for detoxifying the body of toxins and chemicals, and it protects against the harmful effects of pollution. It is able to protect against more than 30 common pollutants and enhances their detoxification from the body. In addition, it helps to remove heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, arsenic and mercury from the body.

Low intake of vitamin Ñ appears to be a risk factor for many forms of cancer. Diets high in fruit and vegetables, and therefore high in vitamin C, have been associated with lower risk for cancer of the oral cavity, oesophagus, stomach, colon and lung. Many studies have found a reduced risk of cancer in people who have high vitamin Ñ intakes. The protective effect seems to be strongest for cancers of the oesophagus, larynx, mouth and pancreas. Vitamin Ñ also provides protection against cancers of the cervix, liver, stomach, rectum, breast and lung.

Vitamin Ñ works synergistically with vitamin E. Vitamin E scavenges cancer-causing free radicals in cell membranes and vitamin Ñ attacks cancer-causing free radicals in the body’s biologic fluids. It is believed vitamin Ñ enhances longevity, increases the survival time of cancer patients and decreases tumour size.

Vitamin C, vitamin E and other antioxidants inhibit many cancer-causing compounds and may help to prevent cancer of the digestive system. They also have the ability to inhibit many carcinogens in food from causing stomach cancer. Taking 1500 mg of vitamin Ñ a day may also help to prevent the formation of bladder cancer. With lung cancer patients, vitamin Ñ may to increase survival time and improve general well-being.

Vitamin Ñ decreases the toxicity caused from radiation therapy and chemotherapy. It is useful during chemotherapy to help protect sperm from DNA (genetic) damage that can cause inherited disease or cancer in a man’s offspring. It is essential in the treatment of cancer by stimulating the production of lymphocytes (cancer-fighting cells) and providing cellular antioxidant defense.

Vitamin Ñ has a protective effect on the lungs and can reduce the cancer-causing and damaging effects of cigarette smoke. It gives strength to all supporting tissues, including those surrounding tumours, and thus can help prevent or delay the spread of tumours. Vitamin Ñ helps to stimulate the activity of white blood cells, inhibiting viruses and bacteria and bringing about a rapid recovery and enhanced wound healing. Its many other health activities include helping in the formation of collagen, giving strength to bones, cartilage and connective tissue, aiding the integrity of blood vessels and helping to slow cellular ageing/destruction and delaying chronic disease. Vitamin Ñ works best in the presence of bioflavonoids.

Breast Cancer

It is believed that women with breast cancer who have a high vitamin Ñ intake have a much lower chance of dying of breast cancer than women with a low vitamin Ñ intake.

Colon Cancer

Studies suggest that higher vitamin Ñ intakes may lead to a decreased risk of colon cancer. Supplemental use of vitamin A and Ñ also showed a protective effect on colon cancer risk.

Lung Cancer

Studies have also shown that vitamin Ñ may have a protective effect against lung cancer. Those with low fruit and vegetable intake and, therefore, low vitamin Ñ intake may face an increased risk of the disease.

Prostate Cancer

Long term studies conducted over a 30 year period have recently suggested that vitamin Ñ improves survival in patients with prostate cancer.

Stomach Cancer

Results of some studies suggest that low vitamin Ñ intake is linked to an increased risk of stomach cancer.
