THE OLDER ‘YOUNG’ PATIENT – SEX IN RELATIONSHIPS

She stayed with her first lover for three years, but now she had a new partner and she was sure he was the right one for her. Sex was fine with him. The doctor wondered out loud how sex was possible in view of her reaction to the speculum and the doctor’s fingers. ‘Oh, the penis is different – but fingers are forbidden – my partner knows that and is happy to go along with it.’ At the next meeting Miss C. confessed that sex with her first lover had always been painful. It seemed that her use of the words ‘very funny’ was a way of describing the screwing up she had had to do to endure love making as well as smear taking.

During her first tentative self-examination in the doctor’s presence she revealed her fantasies about her vagina. She thought her long painted finger nails would cut it. Immediately afterwards she started talking about her mother, not previously mentioned. ‘When I was very young there always seemed to be blood around and lots of men. I was with her because I hadn’t started school. When I was older she kept going away to have operations, female operations.’

Sharing these feelings about the potential of fingers and instruments to cut her precious, fragile vagina, and her painful recollections of her mother, helped Miss C. to sort things out in her mind, and she found this particularly helpful as she was thinking about having a baby and had been anxious about all the procedures.
