SUPER FOODS: THE PROTEIN MYTH

Along with CCs, vitamins and minerals, you need protein, but only in small amounts. Too much harms your “doctor within.” We’ve been raised to believe the myth that protein is good for you—the more, the better. After all, it builds muscles, right?

Well, it’s true enough that protein is the framework upon which your body is built. It’s also necessary for the manufacture of enzymes and hormones, and it can be burned for body energy. Protein is important. But more is not better. If you’re eating the S.A.D., you may be getting much too much protein, and that can be dangerous. High-protein diets are associated with increased incidence of cancer in experimental animals. In humans, high levels of protein in the diet have also been linked to calcium loss, which can lead to osteoporosis (bone-thinning) and, therefore, to bone fractures. If your kidneys can’t excrete the excess protein, your uric acid level will rise and may trigger gout. Another problem is that the high-protein meats and poultry we eat are full of fat and cholesterol.
