Men's Health-Erectile Dysfunction
The modern practice for the father to witness the birth of his child may be an intensely fulfilling experience making up for the physical changes of pregnancy which the father is denied, and allowing the couple to feel they have shared equally in the event. For some men, however, the experience may be traumatic and if this is not recognized and understood, psychological problems may ensue. As with women, these men may need to be ‘debriefed’, to relive their experience with another person so that their fears and fantasies may be explored and understood. One man spoke of his horror at so much blood and mess, and his terrible feelings of guilt that he himself had caused it. Another that he feared that sexual intercourse could only damage his wife more. One man who had fainted as the baby’s head emerged felt his penis would be forever lost in the huge and gaping vagina. Yet another, that his wife’s vagina was now stitched so tight that if he tried to enter her his penis would break. In contraceptive counselling such fear of damage to the woman or her partner may be expressed as fears of damage by the method itself, and reason for the fear will need to be fully explored before a satisfactory contraceptive decision can be reached.
