a. ‘He will get hot flushes and dizzy spells.’
fact: No. If he does the cause is not M-M. He must consult his doctor.
b. ‘He will let himself go physically and become a mess.’
fact: He might. Surviving the male-menopause demands self-interest, self-respect, ambition. A man who lets himself go does so because his ego-balloon is punctured and he sees himself as a failure.
c. ‘He will become emotionally unstable and unreliable.’
fact: Perhaps. The male-menopause is essentially an emotional crisis.
d. ‘Menopausal men take to drink.’
fact: Many do but not all. Alcohol relaxes. It temporarily creates a feeling of wellbeing and in bars and at parties it helps create an illusion of still keeping up with the young set. It also temporarily blocks out worry and stress. Dependence on alcohol can become a major problem as a result of M-M.
e. ‘Menopausal men take to drugs.’
fact: Many do but not all. Drugs are often considered part of youth culture: many men believe that by joining in they are youthful too.
