HOMOSEXUAL OFFENDERS VS. CHILDREN: HOMOSEXUAL ACTIVITY

Of the three groups of homosexual offenders, the homosexual offender vs. children is the least oriented toward his own sex. He has, however, far more homosexual experience than any of the nonhomosexual offenders. In incidence of homosexual experience, in or out of prison, the three groups of homosexual offenders head the rank-order, the offenders vs. children being third with 81 per cent. They also rank third in percentage with experience outside prison (80 per cent) and in the proportion with more than incidental experience (59 per cent). Both of these figures far exceed those of nonhomosexual-offender groups: for example, only 39 per cent of the prison group, fourth in rank, had more than incidental experience,
The homosexual offenders vs. children invariably rank third in the accumulative incidence of homosexual experience by any given age after twelve. The proportions rise from nearly three fifths by age fourteen to nearly two thirds by age eighteen.
A very large number of those who reached puberty early—by age twelve—had had homosexual activity, some 65 per cent to be exact, but for those who reached puberty later the incidence falls to three fifths. The median individual had his first postpubertal contact with another male at 14.3 years of age; only the homosexual offenders vs. adults had younger initial experience.
The age-specific incidence, the number who had homosexual contact within a given age-period, shows the single homosexual offenders vs. children in their customary third place with percentages well above those of the fourth ranked group (usually the prison group). Between puberty and age fifteen almost half had engaged in homosexual activity; between ages sixteen and twenty, slightly fewer, but the percentages become progressively larger in older age-periods, reaching about a 65—73 per cent level from age twenty-six on as far as our sample permits calculation. The age-specific incidence among married offenders was, of course, much less (5 to 30 per cent) but sufficient to earn them second or third rank in most age-periods.
The average homosexual offender vs. children, while out of prison, had nearly 30 homosexual contacts per year. While this frequency is less than that of the other homosexual offenders, it is more than three times as great as that of the next ranked group, the prison group, which reported a frequency of 8.4 per year, and nearly ten times that of the control group (3.4). The customary third ranking of the homosexual offenders vs. children is again seen in the frequencies of homosexual activity during five-year age-periods among unmarried males from puberty to age twenty-five. Whether one calculates mean or median, they rank third up to age twenty; in age-period 21-25 they drop to fourth place, being displaced by the prison group. The average unmarried homosexual offender vs. children between puberty and age thirty reached orgasm with another male slightly less than once every two or three weeks (except for an aberrant and probably spurious decrease at age-period 21-25).
A similar situation exists with respect to the number of male partners: the homosexual offenders vs. children again are in third place with an average (median) of 19 partners—more than twice as many as reported by the fourth ranked group (the prison group, with eight partners). About as many (roughly one fifth) had two to five partners as had six to 20 or over 75; this equitable distribution is uncommon.
The number of homosexual offenders vs. children who married is rather small, and the number of these who continued homosexual activity is smaller still (never over four men in any age-period); hence no frequencies have been calculated.
Whereas by definition all these homosexual offenders made sexual overtures to or had sexual contact with boys under twelve, only about three quarters of them reported specific contact with boys of this age. The remaining quarter presumably did not have actual physical contact (and hence did not give the ages when asked about their sexual partners) or denied the behavior. Nevertheless, three quarters is by far the largest proportion of any group reporting contact with boys under twelve. Eighteen per cent stated that their youngest male partners were between twelve and fifteen, which places them in fourth rank below the other homosexual offenders and exhibitionists but well above other groups in this particular age-of-youngest-partner category. A relatively small number, 3 per cent, said their youngest partners (after they themselves were age eighteen) were between sixteen and seventeen years old. In brief, the pedophilia of the homosexual offenders vs. children is quite evident.
As for expressed age preference, 29 per cent (the largest proportion recorded) included males under twelve. Some 52 per cent (again a percentage exceeded by none) preferred partners twelve to fifteen years old. Twenty-three per cent, the second largest percentage, would choose partners sixteen or seventeen years old. With regard to older partners, the homosexual offenders vs. children generally rank below the other two homosexual groups, with 33 per cent favoring partners eighteen to twenty-four years old; 10 per cent, twenty-five to thirty-four years old; and 6 per cent, thirty-five to forty-four years of age. The average preferred age was 15.6 years, the youngest age (by nearly two years) reported by any group. Here again the pedophilic trend is easily recognized.
While the homosexual offenders vs. children rank third (below the other homosexual offenders) in general approval of male homosexuality, they are unlike the other homosexual offenders in that more of their members disapproved (40 per cent) than approved (35 per cent); the remainder were neutral. Thus we see that in addition to having less homosexual activity than the two other homosexual-offender groups, the homosexual offender vs. children is also less tolerant of such activity in others.
